The court heard that one of the Croydon-based company's vehicles lost a pair of nearside rear wheels last January after all but one of the wheel studs had sheared off inside the hub. But while the company was fined, the driver was granted an absolute discharge.

Advance Fuels fitter Michael Collins said he had seen the driver check the wheelnuts with a bar on the morning of the accident.

Quashing the fine, and granting an absolute discharge, Judge Hare said he accepted that the company had done everything it could to ensure that its vehicles were in a fit and roadworthy condition, He awarded the company costs.
