• Britain could be in the running to land one of the key transport jobs in the European Commission.
Eduardo Pena, the directorgeneral of the commission's transport directorate, is expected to move on, and the UK Government is pressing to have him replaced with its appointee.
This could be Jim Currie, who is the current aide to the competition commissioner, Sir Leon Brittan.
Director-generals have a semi-political function; they run directorates under Commissioners. The present Transport Commissioner is Karel van Miert.
