LAST year British Road Services lost La 5.2m. tons of traffic and covered

59.6m. fewer miles. As reported in "The Commercial Motor" on January 16, revenue dropped by £1.3m. compared with 1951.

In 1952, 41.6m. tons were carried, contrasted with 46.8m. tons in 1951. Last year's mileage of 705.5m. compared with 765.2m. in 1951. Receipts in 1952 amounted to £76.2m, and in 1951 to £77.5m.

At the end of last year, B.R.S. had 39,167 motor vehicles and articulated units, compared with 41,305 at the end of 1951. Of last year's total, 22,259 were petrol-engined and 16,908 oilengined. • Staff numbered 65,147, of whom 5,927 were administrative and clerical employees. So far, there is no sign of an improvement in B.R.S. traffic, as in the first four weeks of this year, receipts totalled £5.6m., compared with £5.8m. in the corresponding period of 1952.

Last year, the number of passengers a73 carried by the provincial and Scottish bus companies of the British Transport Commission was 1.5 per cent. higher than in 1951. Vehicle mileage rose by 2.5 per cent. The Tilling group carried 1.2 per cent, more passengers and covered 2 per cent, more miles, and the Scottish group handled 2,1 per cent. more passengers and travelled 3.3 per cent, more miles.

In the first four weeks of this year, the B.T.C. bus companies earned £3.2m. compared with £2.9m. in the similar period of 1951. London Transport's revenue rose from £4.4m. to £4.9m.

INCREASE FOR BUILDERS' DRIVERS

TRANSPORT workers in the build' ing industry are to receive an increase of 8s. per week as from February 2. The agreement between the Transport and General Workers' Union and the National Federation of Building Trades Employers has been revised to provide that for each 4d. per hour increase in die building standard rates, road transport workers should receive an extra 2s. per week.
