An authority on such questions says that the enforcement of the braking and plating regulations appears to be lagging well behind the programme that was envisaged. He is F. P. (Pat) Parkes, grandson of one of the founders of Small and Parkes Ltd., and now, at 37, chairman of the company; and he has a close interest in long-term testing as applied to commercial vehicles. He tells me that chassis manufacturers have lately been taking an intensified interest in research on this side. The Don factory has been getting an increasing number of requests from industry for laboratory test work, not only on actual friction materials but on drums and other related components.
Among the projects on which the test department is busy is a three-year operation in connection with Volvo, while a full-time road test is operating for Scania-Vabis. Small and Parkes' export position in Scandinavia is particularly strong.
