Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

• Truck sales are still up on last year's figures, according to the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders.

The number of new trucks over 3.5 tonnes registered in August is 7.3% higher than for the same month in 1991 and, helped by the traditional new registration rush, nearly three times the July figure.

The most dramatic individual performance comes from Iveco Group, which has managed an improvement of 26% on August last year and increased sales by 264% since July.

"We are absolutely delighted," says an Iveco Ford spokesman, stressing that the company has not introduced any special deals which could boost the figures. But he does not see the increase as heralding an end to the truck sales slump.

"There's little likelihood that there will be any overall improvement on last year's figures," says Emms. "The market is still down — even a 10% increase in 1993 wouldn't set the world on fire."
