THE Department of Transport has published draft Orders under the Highways Acts relating to proposals to construct a by-pass replacing a length of the A47 BirminghamGreat Yarmouth trunk road running through Uppingham.

Uppingham is centred around a small Market Square and the junction of the busy A47 trunk road with the Oakham-Kettering Road (A6003). The carriageway west of the crossroads is narrow and winding with poor driver visibility.

The Department considers it impracticable to improve the existing road and proposes to construct the by-pass north of this road. This would be about 2.84 km (1.76 miles) long and would start immediately west of Ayston Turn (Birches Road) and following a generally easterly direction would rejoin the existing road west of Bisbrooke Cross Roads.

Prohibited eastbound traffic will be diverted via the A614/A1041 for Snaith and Selby and the A63 to Howden. Westbound traffic will be diverted via the B1228 Knedlington Lane to the A63 for Selby and then via the A1041 /A614 for Snaith and Traffic permitted to use the M62 motorway will be diverted, eastbound via A614 to the Goole Interchange, and westbound via the A614 Howden spur road to Howden interchange.

The Motorway will follow the line of the Skelmersdale Regional Road through the new town. This has been upgraded from a dual carriageway to full motorway standard. Eventually it is intended to extend the M58 link to Aintree.

Part of the A59 Liverpool-Preston road at Ormskirk will be closed to southbound traffic on Sundays, September 11, 18 and 25 for resurfacing work at the roundabout at the junction of County Road and Holborn Hill.

An alternative route with adequate signposting will be in operation.

Transport Minister William Rodgers has authorised the detrunking of part of the Al2 known as London Road North at Lowestoft.

This section of trunk road has been relieved of through traffic by the eastern section of the Lowestoft inner relief road which opened in July. The western section of the relief road is due to open early 1978 when the entire relief road will be trunked, forming a gyratory system,
