TTIBE most extensive bus business .1 operating entirely in the rural areas of the North Riding of Yorkshire is the Northallerton Omnibus Service, Ltd., locally known as the "N.O.S." The company was started by Mr. French, of Northallerton, The Commercial Motorlearns, during the general strike of 1926 and, before the railway services were generally resumed, had obtained a secure foothold.

The first service to be put into operation was that from Northallerton, via Wensleydale, to Hawes. About two years ago it was extended to Kirby Stephen. Other ser_vices have for some time been operated between Northallerton and Richmond, Bedale and Ripon, and Leyburn and Hawes, via Askrigg,.

On all these routes buses run several times daily, whilst On the Wensleydale service buses are worked practically every hour. Between Bedale and Northallerton a frequent service is operated on Wednesdays (for Northallerton market) and Saturdays.

Last year a company was formed to take over the business and since then several important developments have taken place.

During last summer an express service was put into operation between To EL.acxrooE Northallerton and Blackpool, via Bedale, Leyburn, Sedbergh and Lancaster (for Morecambe), one coach running daily in each direction. This service was suspended during the winter but has since been recontinued.

This spring a service started between Leyburn and Coverdale virgin ground for buses. A crosscountry service has been started from Richmond to Scarborough via Northal lerton. This is the first through service to be commenced from the North Yorkshire dales to the cast.

The headquarters of the company are now in Bedale. A large new central depot has been constructed there. The fleet comprises Rea and Gifford vehicles.

One of the most important features of the service is the excellent connections that it maintains. The N.O.S.has entered into a working agreement with the United' Automobile Services, Ltd., and its allied companies (controlled by the London and NorthEakern Railway Co.) and this company maintains connections with the Blackpool service from West Hartlepool, Stockton, Middlesbrough, Darlington and Richmond. Through bookings are in operation.

The same company operates services from Ripon to Harrogate, York, Boroughbridge, Knaresborough and 'rhirsk, connecting with the N.O.S.'s Bedale and Ripon services. A late theatre bus is run on certain nights from Northallerton to Bed ale, connecting with the United Automobile Service's Darlington buses, so as to enable residents of Bedale to attend the Darlington theatres. At Kirby Stephen buses connect for Appleby and Cumberland, whilst, at Blackpool, Ribble buses connect for Liverpool, Manchester, etc.
