LEYLAND Atlantean 78-seat buses I—, would provide a better public service and improve the standards of employees in Sheffield, said Aid. S. T. Dyson, chairman of the transport committee, last week. He spoke at the handing-over of the first 15 of 43 Atianteans to the Sheffield undertaking.
He added that they sought to be good employers, but both sides must honour national agreements or the fabric of .the present system would be undermined. Sheffield stood by the agreements and would carry them out to the letter, but would not be persuaded to alter them by indirect methods, Aid. Dyson was referring to the fact that Sheffield bus crews had informed the management that they would refuse to carry standing passengers on largecapacity buses from this week.
He added that before the war the undertaking scrapped vehicles after six year,. Now the life had extended to 12-14 years.
