Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

1 II E FREIG11-1 l'ransport Association has responded to the continuing wheel fixing failure problem by publishing a guide book.

As promised earlier this year at the Institute of Road Transport Engineers' Solihull conference (CM. May 25), the FTA guide recommends only two torque wrench settings for wheel nuts: 550Nin (400 Ibit) for BS or DIN type fixings, and 680Nm (50(1 Ibit) for the ISO spigot 'mounted type of wheel.

I however, the guide says: "Whenever possible, reference should be made to the vehicle manufacturer's recommendations on the fitting of wheels and on the checking procedures thereafter." It also makes particular reference to Dal's recommendations for its DIN standard wheel fixings which "because of the stud material used" is between 370Nin and 450Nm (275 lbft and 330 lbft).

In easy-to-understand language, with diagrams, the FTA guide describes the different types of wheel fixing in common use.

The FTA says it "has been disturbed about the wide variation in recommendations applied by the vehicle and component manufacturers to what is, in theory, a basic component."

The wheel security guide is available only to FTA mem bers, at a copy.
