Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

ON Monday the Public Works and Municipal Services Congress and Exhibition opens at Olympia. The Exhibition is this year expected to be the largest in its history—it was first held in 1919—and will occupy all three halls and the galleries at Olympia, a total of 400,000 sq. ft. Almost 500 concerns will have stands at the Exhibition which will be open daily from 10 a.m. to 6.30 p.m. until Saturday, November 17.

As usual the Exhibition will be the most important in this country for those wishing to see the ranges of equipment available for civil engineering and public works fields, quarrying and also in the machinery and materials used by municipalities and other undertakings for the maintenance of roads, street cleaning and waste disposal.

The. most impressive displays from a commercial vehicle aspect will probably be the large-capacity, dumpers exhibited by a number of concerns. The largest model to be seen at the Exhibition will be the SN35 shown by Aveling-Barford Ltd. (Stand 70). This has a payload capacity of 35 tons and is powered by a Rolls-Royce eight-cylinder turbo-charged diesel engine developing 450 b.h.p. A smaller model being shown by the same concern is the SR Dumper which has a 10 ton payload capacity and is being shown with a new design body of aluminium alloy. It has a capacity of 10 cu. yd. and is intended for carrying lightweight materials being offered as an alternative to the standard and rock bodies already available. The SR is powered by the Leyland 0.400 diesel engine.

A.E.C. Ltd. (Stand 229) will again be displaying an example of its 20 Cu. yd. Dumptruk. Instead of the usual " show " model, however, the exhibit will be a vehicle which has been withdrawn from service especially for the Exhibition. The machine is a side-tipping version with a payload capacity of 30 tons and is one of a fleet of 30 Dumptruks being used by Costain Mining Ltd. on an open-cast coal site in Scotland. It has completed 18 months' service. This model of Dumptruk is powered by an A.E.C. AVT 1100 turbo-charged 18 litre diesel engine developing 340 b.h.p. and the transmission incorporates a Twin Disc three-stage hydraulic torque converter and a threespeed and reverse auxiliary gearbox. Edbro B.E. type 15 DSS three-ram tipping gear is employed and the maximum angle of tip is 72°.

A six-wheeled dumper to be shown by FodenS Ltd. (Stand 113) has a 20 ton capacity. The Foden Mk. 7 diesel engine fitted to this model develops 225 b.h.p. and the transmission incorporates a 12-speed underdrive gearbox. Thos. W. Ward Ltd. (Stand 94) are sole concessionnaires in the U.K. for Douglas Equipment Ltd. and their main exhibit will be the latest model in the Douglas range, the Automaster 15. As its name implies, this machine has a 15 ton capacity and incorporates automatic transmission. Another feature of the machine is power steering and the body has a struck capacity of 12 Cu. yd., the maximum tipping angle being 70°. Making their first appearance at the Public Works Exhibition will be Atkinson Vehicles Ltd. (Stand 77). They will be showing the six-wheeled dumper which was featured at the recent Commercial Motor Show. This is a special version of the Atkinson DT.1366 range and the body, which is built by Autolifts and Engineering Co. Lid., has a struck capacity of 12 cu. yd. The engine fitted is a Cummins HU.170, 164 b.h.p. diesel engine and a Z.F. gearbox—the AK-75 model—is fitted. Tipping gear is the Autolifts model D.25 which comprises twin, tripleextension rams giving a maximum tipping angle of 70°. A Scammell Himalayan dump truck is to be included in the display of Leyland Motors Ltd. (Stands 127 and 128). A Leyland 0.680 diesel engine developing 200 b.h.p. is fitted in this model and drives through a six-speed constant-mesh gearbox. The body is of conventional design and has a capacity of 12-14 cu. yd. It is scow-ended and incorporates replaceable steel wearing plates. Twin-ram underbody tipping gear is fitted which gives a 70° angle of tip, discharge time being 10 sec. Light-alloy bodies for dumper-type vehicles will' be featured by G. E. Neville and Son Ltd. (Stand 126). One will be shown on an A.E.C. chassis and will be a 10 cu. yd. model, the other will be based on an Aveling-Barford Type SRL Articulated dumpers of unconventional design are to be shown by both Whitlock Bros. Ltd. (Stands 48 and 49) and Shawnee Poole Ltd. (Stand 239). Both are of 10 ton capacity; Whitlock are to show their Dinkum Dumper 70 in which the dumper semi-trailer is permanently coupled to a two-wheeled tractor-type tractive unit, whilst the Shawnee Poole Model 750 Series 2—which is being shown for the first time-4s similar to their previous design and uses a similar principle to the Whitlock D.70, except that the tractive unit is a converted Fordson, International or Nuffield tractor. The Shawnee Poole is known as the Rear Dump Hauler and a unit similar to it is the Leedsall dumper trailer shown by Robert Hudson (Raletrux) Ltd. (Stand 25).

Small four-wheeled dumpers are to be shown by a number of concerns including Road Machines (Drayton) Ltd. (Stands 19 and 20), Whitlock Bros. Ltd., Thwaites Engineering Co. Ltd. (Stand 81), E. Boyden and Co. Ltd. (Stand 213), the Liner Concrete Machinery Co. Ltd. (Stand 238), and C. H. Johnson (Machinery) Ltd. (Stand 346).

Vehicle-mounted concrete mixer/agitators continue to be popular and a number of examples are to be seen. In addition to their dump truck, Fodens are to show a mixer on a sixwheeled chassis and a Foden chassis will also be used as the basis for the unit to be shown by Riternixer Ltd. (Stands 226 and 227). In this case, however, it will be an eight-wheeled chassis and the Ritemixer 7 cu. yd. equipment mounted on it is a version of the Mulder Mixer made by Mulder N.V. of Holland. Power for the agitation of the mixer is provided by a B.M.C. 2-2 litre diesel engine coupled to a B.M.C. gearbox, as normally fitted behind the B.M.C. 5-5 litre engine. A chute assembly is fitted to facilitate placing of the mixed concrete, but this can be released quickly and swung out of the way if direct discharge into dump trucks and so on is required. The drum and the main frame are imported from Holland, whilst the engine, transmission and accessories are assembled by Ritemixer.

The main display of Winget Ltd. (Stands 62 and 63) will be concerned with concrete mixing and laying in various forms. Vehicle-mounted equipment will be the Winget Agitor, a 4 cu. yd. version of which will be shown, but other models of 6.5 and 8 cu. yd. are also available. An extendable chute is fitted. This swings through 180° and has a high discharge which permits placing direct into forms or remote positions within a radius of 12 ft.

Blaw Knox Ltd. (Stands 212 and 222) will feature their Varispeed 4/5 cu. yd. truck mixer/agitator. This unit has hydrostatic drive and will be exhibited on a Thames Trader chassis with six-wheel conversion by All Wheel Drive Ltd. The 16 ton g.v.w. allows up to 5 cu. yd. of pre-mixed concrete to be transported.

Ransomes and Rapier Ltd. (Stand 55) are to show a new lightweight Rapier 4 cu. yd. hydraulic-drive truck/mixer mounted on a Dodge chassis. The mixer has an unmixed batch capacity of 6 cu. yd. and can agitate a batch of 5 cu. yd. of pre-mixed concrete. Power for the agitation of the mixer is provided by two hydraulic pumps, one driven from the front of the engine and the other from a power take-off mounted on the vehicle's gearbox. In addition to this mixer, Ransomes and Rapier are to show an example of their Rapier 2020 vehiclemounted crane. This will be mounted on a Foden six-wheeled chassis and incorporates diesel-electric drive for the crane movements, the crane superstructure revolving on a cross-roll bearing which eliminates the need for a centre post. Maximum lifting capacity of the crane is 20 tons at a radius of 10 ft. and strut jib lengths of from 30-100 ft. are available although the crane will be shown with an 80 ft. jib.

The truck-mounted version of the Coles Ranger and the strut jib model of the Coles Leda will represent the range of Coles diesel-electric mobile cranes to be shown at the Exhibition by Steels Engineering Products Ltd. (Stand 59). The Ranger has a capacity of 25 tons with a basic 30 ft. jib at 10 ft. radius and is mounted on a six-wheel Coles crane carrier which was specially designed for the model. The machine on show will be fitted with a 100 ft. jib, with which 9 tons at 24 ft. 3 in. radius can be handled. The 4 ton capacity Coles Leda will be shown with a 50 ft. strut jib. This model is the smallest and the latest addition to the Coles range, it is a fast-travel crane and the maximum lift of 4 tons is handled with the basic 20 ft. jib at 8 ft. radius. With a 50 ft. jib, as it will be seen at the Exhibition, the Leda handles tons at 13 ft. 6 in. radius.

Two versions of the Tunny 3 ton hydraulically operated crane unit will be -shown by Tunny Cranes Ltd. (Stand 345). One

of these will be mounted on a Bedford 4 x 4 chassis and will be seen on the concern's own stand, 345, whilst a second based on a Fordson Super Major Tractor will be seen on the stand of the Ford Motor Co. Ltd. When fitted with a 16 ft. jib, the crane will lift 3 tons at a 7 ft, radius, reducing to 1 ton at 14 ft. 8 in. radius. A 10 ft. jib extension is available and when fitted the lifting capacity is 1-25 tons at 8 ft. and 10 cwt. at 20 ft. radius. Hydraulic power for the crane motions is supplied by a Vickers vane-type pump driven off a transfer box in the lorry-mounted version, and through from the engine crankshaft on the other model.

The British Hoist and Crane Co. Ltd. (Stand 93) will include amongst its exhibits the Iron Fairy 3-60 mobile crane and, although Priestman Bros. Ltd. (Stands 36 and 60) will not be showing any lorry-mounted cranes, they will be exhibiting an item of equipment applicable to these units in their Cross Roll Slewing Ring, The Lambert Engineering Co. (Glasgow) Ltd., manufacturers of the Hydrocon range, will be showing three models on Stand 233. The Highlander 5 tonner has now been superseded by the Highlander Super 6-ton crane and this will be shown complete with modifications to enable transportation of the new jib length of 64 ft. as a complete self-contained unit, yet complying with the new regulations regarding overhang. With these modifications, neither police escort nor second man is required and the machine can be operational within minutes of arriving on the site. The maximum capacity of 6 tons is obtained on a 24 ft. jib at a 10 ft. radius and loads of up to 2 tons can be handled on a 64 ft. jib at a 16 ft. radius. The Highlander Super will be mounted on an Albion four-wheeled chassis and is also available on a Dodge chassis. The Hydrocon Hebridean —a 12-5 ton capacity crane—will be shown mounted on a Foden six-wheeled chassis. The maximum capacity is obtained at a 10 ft. radius on the basic 30 ft. long jib and the capacity is 2 tons at 29 ft. radius on a 100 ft. jib. A special feature of this model is automatic outriggers which are controlled from the cab. These are fitted with a mechanical locking device which acts as a safeguard in the event of a failure.

The chassis for both the models are extensively modified by Lambert before their cranes are mounted and a special cab also made by Lambert is employed. The third crane model being shown is the Hydrocon Admiral which is a 6 ton model and is intended basically for marine work, having a complete self-contained unit with a separate cab and engine. It can, however, be mounted on a six-wheeled chassis with a wheelbase

of approximately 13 ft. With a 24 ft, jib the maximum capacity of 6 tons is obtained at a 10 ft. radius and the Admiral's range is similar to that of the Highlander Super with jibs up to 64 ft. In a similar category to mobile cranes although intended to lift personnel, is the latest model in their range of hydraulic platforms to be shown by Simon Engineering Dudley Ltd. (Stand 58). This is the D.50 which is suitable for a working height of up to 50 ft. and can carry a load of 500 lb. in the 2 ft. 10 in. by 4 ft. 9 in. cage. The platform will be shown mounted on an Austin chassis, and gives a maximum outreach of 29 ft. 8 in. with full 360° rotation in either direction. Also really in the same category is the Tico crane which is basically intended for mounting on lorries but is being featured at the Exhibition by Ernest Doe and Sons Ltd. (Stand 340) mounted on a Fordson tractor.

Main interest for municipal operators at the Public. Works Exhibition will be road sweeper/collectors, gully-emptiers and refuse collectors. In the first category, Lacre Ltd, (Stand 354) will be showing a new model, the Bedford-Lacre Model G.. This is mounted on a left-hand-drive Bedford KFS chassis and is a low-priced version of their standard suction road sweeper. It is fitted with the same design exhauster, dirt container and water tank, but has only a vertical scarifying brush and a suction nozzle fitted. The equipment gives a maximum sweeping width of .3 ft. and a 20 ft. wandering hose is fitted at the rear of the dirt container. Other sweepers to be shown are the Bedford-Lacre Model RZT which is also mounted on a Bedford KFS left-hand-drive chassis and has a gutter-collector brush with a sweeping width of 19 in., a brush in front of this set at an angle giving a sweeping width of 6 ft. (this brush can be engaged and disengaged as required) and a hydraulically driven vertical scarifying brush. The dirt container has a capacity of 4 cu. yd. and the water tank a capacity of 220 gal. The third model is the Bedford-Lacre Model SA which is mounted on a Bedford 14A 4 ton chassis and has a front wire gutter brush and a narrow-width main brush, giving a sweeping width with standard equipment of 3 ft. 9 in, An extension brush can be fitted increasing the width of sweep to 6 ft. 4 in.

Lewin Road Sweepers Ltd. (Stand 219) will be featuring two road sprinkler/sweeper/collectors; the Sweepmaster which is designed for long range work and the Mechanical Orderly, a compact vehicle with a sweep-width of 5 ft. and, because of its small overall width, particularly suitable for operating in narrow roads. Also to be on the same stand is a new Brockhouse 15 cwt. capacity all-steel salvage trailer suitable for towing behind refuse-collection vehicles. Detachable steelmesh side extensions give a capacity of over 4 cu. yd. • Small battery-electric trucks usedeby many local authorities for street cleaning work will be featured by The Stanley

Engineering Co. Ltd. (Stand 413). Four models are being shown, the Manulectric Model 4, end tipping street orderly truck, the Manuleetric Model 4, 12-bin-type street orderly truck, the Man ulectric Standon street cleansing truck and the Manual two-bin-type street orderly truck. William Bunce and Son (Stands 31 and 32) are to show a wide variety of equipment of interest to users of municipal vehicles. Their display will include the Tintern trailer gullyemptier, the Bunce F-type snow-plough for fitting on to vehicles and tractors and the Bunce Universal tractor-mounted sweeper/ collector. Gritting machines will also be shown.

Johnston Bros. (Engineering) Ltd. (Stand 104) will be showing their Mk. II suction cleaner which is available as a single-sweep or dual-sweep Model and is mounted on an Austin chassis. Factory and pavement sweepers from the Lewin Universal range, a pedestrian-controlled brush and vacuum pavement sweeper and a pedestrian-operated refuse collector based on a battery-electric vehicle will also be seen. Walkers will also show a battery-electric truck with a reinforced plastics cab and a 4 cu. yd. end-tipping refuse collector body.

Refuse collectors and gully-emPtiers will be shown together on a number of stands. So it will be in the case of the Leyland Group stand (Nos. 127 and 128), where there will be an Albion Claymore gully-emptier with equipment by The Yorkshire Patent Steam Wagon Co. and a Scammell semi-trailer refuse collector. The Albion-Yorkshire vehicle has a total capacity of 800 gal., including 350 gal. of dry sludge and 350 gal. of clean water, and the hydraulic ram which compresses the sludge is also used to unload the tank directly through a door at the rear so that tipping gear is not required. Capacity of the Scammell refuse collector is 9 cu. yd. and four loading ports are provided on each side, these being provided with shutters.

The Yorkshire Patent Steam Wagon Co. have a stand of their own (No. 333) and will be featuring a 450 gal, gully emptier mounted on a two-wheeled trailer, an industrial sweeper which is being introduced at the Exhibition and a refuse tanker mounted on a Karrier 7 ton chassis which is a new type of machine for use in the collection of refuse from specially designed buildings.

The latest Paxit automatic refuse collector will be featured by Dennis Bros. Ltd. (Stand 209). who will also show the Tippax tipping collector, which when fitted with the Dennis container hoist gear becomes a dual-purpose refuse collector. The Dennis Paxit Mk. II and a gully-emptier are also to be shown.

A new refuse collection body will be shown by the Eagle Engineering Co. Ltd. (Stand 234). This is the Crushload which incorporates automatic continuous loading mechanism but in addition the load is pre-compressed against a solid plate before continuous compaction into the body. This gives a high degree of compression and increases the load capacity considerably. The loading and crushing mechanism is operated by a hydraulic pump which can be driven from the front of the vehicle engine and allows the mechanism to be operated when the vehicle is stationary. Also to be featured is the Eagle 800 gal, combined gullyand cesspit-emptier. The cylindrical .kink of this unit has two compartments, one for clean water and the other to receive the contents of street gullies and cesspits.

Glover, Webb and Liversidge Ltd. (Stand 223) are to introduce at the Show a new refuse collector with a 50 cu. yd. capacity. This is the Ramilles which was described in our issue of October 19, and is mounted on a Karrier chassis. This concern will also show a Dual-Tip rear-loading machine on a Karrier chassis and a refuse collector for the City of Birmingham using the Haller system and fitted with a Zoller automatic dustless bin-loading device. A 4 cu. yd. capacity salvage trailer will also be shown and there will be a photographic and model display of the concern's moving floor for bulk refuse collectors.

The new Ramilles will also be featured on the stand of Karrier Motors Ltd. (No. 211), and also with a body by Glover, Webb and Liversidge Ltd. will be a Blenheim Junior compression refuse collector on a Karrier Bantam chassis and a DualTip collection body on a Karrier Gamecock chassis. The final exhibit on the Karrier stand will be a 1,000 gal. gully/cesspool emptier on a 5 ton chassis, the tank and equipment being made by The Yorkshire Patent Steam Wagon Co. A Bedford-Eagle 16/24 cu. yd. Compressmore refuse collection vehicle mounted on a Bedford TK 6 ton petrol-engined chassis will be exhibited by Vauxhall Motors Ltd. (Stand 251). The cab is modified to accommodate a driver and six men and a new hydraulic layout gives a 4Y angle of tip.

Examples of each of the three types of unit in the Dempster range of waste-disposal equipment will be shown by Powell Duffryn Engineering Co. Ltd. (Stands 614 and 615). There will be a Dumpster Type LFW, a Dumpmaster and a Dinosaur. Colour films about Dempster equipment manufactured at the Cardiff works of the concern will also be shown.

With the prospect of winter and inevitably icy roads, interest will be added to the display of Atkinson's Agricultural Appliances Ltd. (Stand 29). The three exhibits on this stand are concerned with the spreading of grit on roads. The Atkinson Motorway Gritter which will be shown fitted to a Bedford 4 x 4 chassis, has been specially designed to spread at speeds of between 30 and 40 m.p.h. The grit-spreading equipment is driven from the vehicle's power take-off and is by combined mechanical and hydraulic operation. The width of spread and application rate can be controlled accurately by the operator in the cab. An Atkinson I.P.O. Gritter Body will be shown fitted on a flat platform Thames Trader. This unit has its own independent power supply—a J.A.P. 5 h.p. petrol engine so that it can be moved from one vehicle to another. The third item will be a 2 ton trailer gritter which has the drive for the glitter mechanism supplied from a gearbox on the axle.

Snow clearance will be featured on the stand of Rolba Ltd. (No. 218) who will show the Rolba-Land-Rover Snowblower Model 62. The snow clearing equipment on this unit is fitted to the rear of a Land-Rover converted by the fitting of a second steering gear and seat facing the rear of the vehicle. The SnowBoy Model 2005/100 will also be shown. This is a tracked version of the concern's self-propelled pedestrian-operated rotary snow-plough and is designed specifically to take the tops off deep snow drifts prior to final clearance. The final Rolba exhibit will be the Musk-Duck which is an amphibious tracked tractor.

The Mercedes-Benz-Unimog to be featured by MercedesBenz (Great Britain) Ltd. (Stand 644) will be shown with a Schmidt snow-plough blade and snow blower operated from the front power take-off and a Schmidt platform-mounted electrically driven sand and gravel spreader at the rear. Various attachments for the Unimog which make it usable for a variety of municipal jobs will also be featured.

Besides the vehicle exhibits there will be a great deal of interest at the Exhibition in the galleries, where components and units for use in the vehicles providing the main attraction will be featured. All the major engine and transmission manufacturers will be there.

Perkins Engines Ltd. (Stand 75) are to show the first examples of a new range of "low-cost three-, fourand six-cylinder diesel engines suitable for use in industrial equipment. These are versions of their 3-152, 4.270 and 6.354 engines and give maximum gross outputs of 43 b.h.p. at 2,400 r.p.m., 62 b.h.p. at 2,000 r.p.m. and 104 b.h.p. at 2,400 r.p.m. respectively. The 3.152 and 4-270 will be available with Simms inertia hand starting as an alternative to electric starting, the latter only is offered on the 3-654 version.
