Not having had much to do with Lex since the days when it simply owned garages in London, I was suitably impressed to learn last week that it is now a group of varied companies which earned over £1m profit last year. More interesting is the fact that its diversification into the travel and freight businesses is gathering momentum. It has already opened travel centres in London and Manchester, and plans to have these in every major commercial centre; and at every travel office there will be a freight forwarding department, too.
Managing director Trevor Chinn told me that although the move into freight has come through the air freight forwarding business, they are going to move into warehousing, packing and, in a small way at first, into road transport itself. Already they are developing van rental. This is a company which prides itself on its skill in applying sophisticated management and financial control to industries where customer service is the prime
requirement; I think we shall be hearing more of them in road transport ere long.
