S. L. Stepley, 51, has been appointed General Manager of Coast Lines Group Road Transport. Mr. Stepley advises the managing director on road transport and is responsible at Group headquarters, Liverpool, for all road transport matters concerned with administration, commercial, public relations and as general co-ordinator. Formerly assistant g.m. to Thomas Allen Ltd., a wholly owned subsidiary of Coast Lines, he moved to Liverpool in 1967 as commercial manager, road transport. Mr. Harrison has spent 40 years in municipal passenger transport, the first 18 at Bradford where he became assistant works superintendent.

G. M. Newberry, 49. a director of United Automobile Services Ltd., has succeeded I. R. Patey as chairman. Mr. Patey remains on the board. As a result Mr. Newberry is now chairman of all National Bus Company subsidiaries in the North Eastern region.

John Haslett has relinquished his executive duties as managing director of Glass's Guide Service Ltd. and has been appointed a deputy chairman. Mr. Haslett's is succeeded as managing director by Leo A. Domhill.

Arthur Hosker, 65, works director of Leyland Motors Ltd., has retired after 50 years' service with the company.

Lord Thorneycroft has been appointed chairman of Pirelli Ltd. in succession to Sir Gerard Drauson, KCMG. Sir Gerard Clauson becomes vice-chairman in the place of Dr. G. A. Baricalla, who remains a member of the board.

A. V. Hughes, BRS branch manager at Ipswicn, has taken up an appointment as transport manager with International Marine Management Inc., at Felixstowe. IMMI are the UK agents for Container Marine Lines.

B. M. K. Homer, 34. has become traffic manager of South Wales Transport Co. and United Welsh Services—the first time there has been a joint appointment. He was formerly traffic manager of United Welsh and deputy traffic manager of SWT.

OBITUARY

We record with regret the deaths of Sidney Bays and John G. Warren.

Mr. Bays, 69, was the founder of Bays Motor Transport Ltd.. Hull. and following nationalization of road transport he became East Hull group manager for BRS for five years. In 1954 he founded Commercial Motors (Hull) Ltd.. which with its subsidiaries joined the Wiles Group 10 years later.
