• Mr. C. R. Hodgson, chairman of the North Western Traffic Commissioners, asked the general manager of Leigh Corporation Transport, Mr, G. D. Smith, giving details in Manchester on Monday of the department's bus replacement plan over the next eight years, why he was planning so far ahead as he would be out of business when the SELNEC PTA would soon absorb the undertaking. Mr. Smith said it was a continuation of previous plans.

Mr. Smith was applying for a fares increase following the Commissioners' last grant on December 2, 1968. There would be a 4d

minimum with 2d progression thereafter. The first of five o-m-o single-deckers would be introduced on May 18 which will save £6,850 annually, said Mr. Smith, and the increase would reduce the estimated accumulated deficit at March 31, 1970 from £12,089 to £589.

, The Commissioners refused the application in the light of the imminence of a PTA takeover, because they did not think the abolition of the 3d minimum desirable and because of the proximity of the last fare rise.
