Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

• Racehorses and professional sprinters are up at the crack of dawn for training sessions in order to hide their form until they meet in competition. Similarly some of the entrants for the 1969 Dunfermline LDoY event had indulged in secret training, and on the day the result was a low-scoring, hotly contested event.

There are those who believe that precompetition training is unfair but surely training is what the LDoY competition is all about. The drivers train to win and in so doing they train themselves to be better and safer drivers.

When Provost Crawford of Dunfermline addressed the 102 competitors at the prizegiving he said: "This is the place to compete, not the public highway, but do let the skills you displayed today be evident on the highway and act as an example to others."

The Dunfermline event is a model for others; in fact this year the new Dundee committee and the new Edinburgh competition secretary were there to study the organization. What a pity secretary John Paul cannot organize the Weather—it was a damp and misty day.

The scoring, apart from Classes A and B, was relatively low with the winners in C and D collecting only 77 penalty points. I believe the most creditable performance was that of J. Scott in Class G who had only 94 penalties, With a maximum-capacity artic that indicates very good driving.

Mr. Scott will be joined at the final on September 7 by his colleague 0. Downie from Class H. Both have been to the final before but only managed to get second places in their classes.

They and Colin Mack with A. Dinnel should present a real challenge at Brarricote. Navyman H. MacKay will also prove a formidable opponent.

The Class A and B representatives should aim at pulling down their scores by about half, in other words—more training. Despite the keen competition there were no protests, surely a tribute to the clerk of the course and his 60 marshals.
