Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

LANSPORT Action Scotland, which launched a report calling r upgrading of the A74 Carlisle-Hamilton road to motorway mdards expects to have talks soon with the Government.

AS secretary Ian Brown d CM: "The ball is in the ottish Office's court."

k Scottish Development partment spokesman said s week that the report had en received and was being nsidered by it.

Mr Brown countered allegams that the report was selffeating because its accident Itistics showed the A74 to be fer than other British trunk ads.

He said: "We were conred to separate emotion out accidents from the ality of the road. Our main )ncern was the official 'owth rate figure for traffic .1 the road."

tcrease Government statistics show 1.79 per cent annual increase A74 traffic, but TAS claims at the true figure is 7.3 per !nt.

Meanwhile, TAS is backing DD plans to build an II mile Ktension to the M74 from raffan to Millbank. This inudes a seven mile Lesmahaow bypass which will eliminte an accident blackspot and new Clyde bridge which will arry the A702 Abingtoniggar road.

A public inquiry is to be held to the compulsory purchase order for the £21 million scheme.

Mr Brown said he understood the principal objector was a pressure group campaigning for more railway electrification instead. "That is a piece of nonsense," he said, "It is only going to delay the thing."
