A NEWSPAPER article written about pensioners' trips led to a Lancashire coach operator being fined for 10 offences of operating express services without a road service licence and being uninsured on five occasions.

The operator, Derek Bracewell, of Great Harwood, was fined a total of £75 by Darwen Magistrates last week. A prosecution application for costs was rejected.

Prosecuting for the North West Traffic Commissioners, John Backhouse said Mr. Bracewell had entered a contract to provide coaches for a lady organising pensioners' trips during the Accrington Annual Holidays. Because of the lady's connection with charity in the area a local newspaper published an article concerning the trips.

Although not an advertisement as such, it was regarded as advertising.

After a ticket had been booked on one of the trips the. police advised Mr Bracewell that it was an illegal operation, but he still went ahead.

The charges concerning operation without insurance arose out of the fact that Mr Bracewell was only insured for operation on contracts.

Mr Bracewell admitted that his insurance did not cover him to operate at separate fares but maintained that it had been a contract operation with no separate fares being collected.

Finding the case proved, the magistrates said there were special reasons for not endor sing Mr Bracewell's driving licence in that he was unaware the trips were being advertised.
