Newcastle Station Deadlock: Move Expected SOM.

Although no settlement has yet been reached between Newcastle Corporation and the members of the Northern Road Transport Owners' Association respecting the working of the Haymarket bus station, Newcastle, which the bus proprietors complain is unworkable in its present state, developments are expected shortly.

The Association complained against the system of allocating platforms by companies, contending that the platforms should be provided according to destinations. Newcastle Corporation refused to alter the layout of the station and the Association declined to pay standage rates until the request for an improved station was agreed to.

Standage rates have been withheld since September last, and the amount now in arrears is over £1,000. Some time ago the corporation proposed to serve writs on the bus owners unless these arrears were paid off within a prescribed period. The bus proprietors have now ascertained that the Haymarket bus station is a highway, and it is stated that the corporation has legally no right to demand standage payments.
