Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

From time to time new methods have been evolved for the insertion of new valve -seatings into old cylinder blocks. One of the most interesting is that recently developed by the Andrews Crankshaft and Cylinder Co.„ Ltd., of Montague Street, Birmingham.

The problem which has to be solved is, of course, to key the new metal firmly to ' the old. In the latest Andrews system, the old seating is first bored out and the replacement ring is pressed into place, but near'the surface there is left a groove which may best be described as of "dovetail" section. This lies partly in the new ring and Partly in the block. Into this space is die-cast an aluminium ring, which acts . as an effective compression seal and, at the same time, prevents the slightest movement of the new ring.

Amongst the advantages claimed for this method of replacement are that the greater thermal expansion of aluminium, as compared with that of cast iron, produces a wedging action which forces the seating ring downwards on to its base. Furthermore, the gradual growth of aluminium, which is known to occur with successive beatings and coolings, helps to improve the joint with use. It will also be realized that, as the sealing ring is at the surface, it can easily be inspected and the groove in which it is placed does not coestitute a weakness at a critical point.
