Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

• Road transport operators in the Common Market have asked for more freedom to operate vehicles and combinations grossing more than 20 tons. which they claim are now unfairly restricted.

Following a meeting in Paris on June 28 of the IRU liaison committee for road hauliers and own-account operators, the EEC Commission has been asked to bring the rules for over-20-ton vehicles into line with those of lighter vehicles.

This would mean abolition of Article 6 of Regulation 543 which required drivers of the heavier vehicles to observe a daily driving limit of 450km (about 275 miles); the IRU Committee claims that this rule, and the daily driving limit of eight hours, "fails to recognize the technical progress achieved in the construction of heavy vehicles" and also keeps drivers unnecessarily away from home.

The committee asks that heavy-vehicle drivers should have the same concession of 9 hours driving twice a week, and shorter breaks between driving periods, which are permitted for the smaller vehicles. This would not only affect Articles 7 and 8 of the Regulation but would mean consequential changes in the AETR regulations.
