Where to Buy your Supplies.

A Carefully-prepared Polishing Powder.

Brown Bros., Ltd., Great Eastern Street, London, E.G., has sent to us a sample of a new polishing powder, Dueo-Shine, which it is marketing. The powder is prepared from the best qualityingredients procurable and contains nothing injurious to plated metals; it is non-mercurial and free from U Cl We have tried the submitted sample, easefully following the directions given, and find that it produces a good and lasting polish.

Cylinder Cleaning by Oxygen,

An occasional trouble experienced w jib petrol motors is their liability to form carbon deposit, and once this forms to any great extent, the even running of the engine is greatly impaired, and, moreover, there is liability of pre-ignition. Formerly a dirty engine necessitated removal of the cylinders for cleaning both them and the piston heads, the process taking considerable time and incurring much expense. Now, however, the removal of carbon deposit from an engine can be done in an hour or so by the Cylclean deearbonizing process.

The Cylelean apparatus is not sold outright, but is let out on lure to garages, etc., by the Internal Combustion Engine Cieaning (2o., Ltd., 3, London Wall Buildings, E.C., which holds the patents ; the company has over 500 licences in the United Kingdom and is rapidly adding to the list.

The process consists of heating the carbon deposit through the valve-cap holes, by means of a small coalgas jet, and afterwards injecting dry oxygen under pressure to burn out the carbon. That the method is satisfactory is proved by the large number of engines operated upon ; the chief depot at. 1, Brick Street, Piccadilly, alone cleans over 7to engines yearly.

High-class engineering Alloys.

II, is, of course, generally well known that pure commercial aluminium is unsuitable for most me

chanical-engineering purposes. Several alloys have been placed on the market from time to time with a view to overcoming the known drawbacks of this metal, but the chief fault of many such mixtures is the highly electrolytic action of the constituents of which the metal is composed, whilst the weight is often unduly increased.

Some metals often used in the. product ion of aluminium alloys invariably lead in the course of time to entire disintegration of a casting. After a number of years of experimental work, National Alloys, Ltd., Altior Foundry. Ilford, has produced a metal which it is claimed possesses many advantages over pure aluminium. " Ivanium," as the metal is called, is only slightly heavier than pure aluminium, and the constitutents of which if is made are entirely non-electrolytic. The maker claims that it is unaffected by acids or atmospheric conditions. The tensile strength of cast " Ivanium "is 11.1 tons per sq. in., which is nearly three times the strength of cast aluminium. " Ivanium" has the property of retaining its hardness after being subjected to het, and is non-magnetic. The company is a specialist in the manufacture of high-class engineering alloys. Its foundries arl equipped with the latest methods of melting and refining, and testing laboratories.

A New Wood-Milne Tire.

A new pneumatic tire which embodies several novel constructional features has recently been put on the market by Wood-Mi4ne, Ltd., Preston. It is called their " New Design Special." The principal aim of the maker has been to produce a tire which shall afford the maximum of service under all working conditions and shall at the same time make for cool running.

The design of the tread is distinctive. It is in effect a combination of ribs and cross-bars forming a series of raised squares around the tire. The maker points (Ott that this design not only counteracts any tendency to skid, whether due to grease, or sharp turning on

nry roads, but it also prevents fore-and-aft slips which is an undoubted advantage when climbing or descending hills.

The shape of the new tire is pear-like, and not oval like many other makes ; this design tends to bring the tread rubber into compression when the tire is inflated. The tire thus acquires, without loss of resiliency an unusual degree of resistance against punctures and cuts.

The special Wood-Milne easing which is built up from eleven-fold yarns of some of the finest Egyptian cotton procurable practically ;renders the tire immune from trouble. In addition the tire is. recessed above the bead to take the rim of the wheel, so that lateral vibration is avoided.

The Wood-Milne " New Design Special" should make a strong appeal to the light van and parcelcar user, particularly as it is guaranteed for fS500 miles against damage from accidents, cuts, bursts and premature wear and tear arising from any cause.
