• One of the Gloucester-based company's vehicles was searched in the British part of the Eurotunnel compound in Coquelles, near Calais in April 2000, and two stowaways were found inside. The company was subsequently fined £4,000, which It paid in full, while the stowaways were released back into France.
Boss Eric Vick says the situation is completely unfair: "It just goes to show that, if you defy the law, then you succeed —if you don't own up or pay, then you get away with it.
'The situation should be that either everyone pays or everyone gets a refund. What the government wants is a double standard."
He also says that drivers feel threatened by the situation: "We've had quite a lot of trouble with illegal immigrants —it used to be they'd get out of the trailer willingly, now they defy you with knives and so forth. We've had people hiding on axles, in the trailer and even on the roof of the cab under the spoiler. We now take every precaution that we can."
