This year's customers' dinner organised by Midlands BRS at Magdalen College, Oxford, was a notably cheerful affair in the midst of so much economic gloom. It is always a rather special, and very enjoyable, social occasion, and the guest list reads like a guide to British industry, but it was also heartening to hear in.d. Arthur Smith declare that "as taxpayers, you won't be disappointed with our profits."

He said that, especially after talking with Leyland and Ford people, he was confident that 1976 was not going to be the gloomy one that some people expected.

A cheerful hint, too, for suppliers. There were limits, said Arthur Smith, to the delay in replacing equipment, especially in view of the increasing cost of maintenance.
