Plans to develop our top container port could lead to more work for local operators. David Harris reports.

THE OPERATOR of the UK's biggest container port plans to increase its capacity by more than 50% by building anew terminal. The original dock basin at Felixstowe -previously used by P&O North Sea Ferries will be converted into a deep-sea container terminal.

Hauliers operating out of the port have given a cautious welcome to the plans, which are expected to channel about a million extra containers a year through the port The port authorities have not yet revealed the cost of the scheme but it is believed to he about £250m.

Allan Dawson, administrative manager at local haulier James Kemball, says: "The expansion certainly seems like a good thing, but we'll have to wait and see how much is actually carried by rail."

A port spokesman says that by current estimates about half of the new container traffic will end up on trucks.

Andrew McNab,business development manager at Maritime Transport, says:"The expansion at Felixstowe is long overdue. I don't mind the role being given to rail because road and rail shouldn't be so much competitive as working hand in hand."

The port hopes that the first phase of the new terminal will open for business in 2008.
