Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

In the race to get London ready for the Olympics some East End operators may get trampled underfoot. David Harris reports.

A HAULIERWHOwas forced to move premises because of Olympic redevelopment could face a rent hike of over 500"/0, according to its owners.

Edwin Shirley Trucking (EST), which specialises in transporting rock bands on tour. is based on a four-acre site in Marshgate Lane, Stratford. in London's East End but it will be forced to move out by July 2007.

Group managing director Tim Norman says: "We've looked into sites nearby and it's clear well have to pay L400,0004500,000 to get somewhere similar to what we have now."

In theory the high-profile opera tor will he compensated by the London Development Agency (LDA), hut the amount is unlikely to match their increased rental costs, Norman adds.

The LDA says compensation is negotiated individually when companies are forced to move: it points out that the circumstances of different firms vary widely.

"We can't comment on individual cases. but not every company will be faced with big rent increases." says a spokesman. "It depends how long ago and on what terms they fixed their rents."

EST, whose customers have included Madonna, Bon Jovi and Rod Stewart, runs 30 tractor units and about 50 trailers but employs nearly 100 drivers.

Despite its eviction, the company welcomes the success of the Olympic bid not least because it may get business from the games.
