Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

SEVEN Atlas Express depots have been closed and 230 jobs have gone as part of a plan to restore the parcels firm to profitability.

Atlas, which was virtually bankrupt when taken over by United Parcels in November last year, is seeking trade union co-operation for its restructure.

The depots at Carlisle, Preston, Stoke-on-Trent, Oxford, Dunstable and Belfast and the parcels side of its Glasgow depot were closed before Christmas and 230 of the 1,500 jobs were axed.

Irish traffic is now handled by the Arrowfast Nationwide depots there, including a large depot in Antrim. But Atlas — which United wishes to keep as an autonomous business — handles all of the group's Channel Islands traffic.

United paid only £800,000 cash when it bought the 121year-old Atlas business.
