• Converted to a 6 X 2 vehicle by York Trailer and equipped with a Hazlemere aluminium Luton body that is demounted with the aid of Intertruck leg gear, a Bedford KG prime mover is employed by Alstons Transport Ltd, the transport division of the Alston group of companies, Albro Works, Nacton Road, Ipswich IP3 9QL, for long-distance deliveries of furniture in conjunction with a York aluminium-bodied drawbar trailer. In due course three prime movers and five trailers of these types will be incoporated in the fleet. The outfit can carry 45 bedroom suites.
The body of the prime mover is demounted by the company's night staff at the factory and replaced by a loaded body. Although the outfit is sometimes employed to deliver a complete load to a customer, it is typically used for a two-part delivery during which the trailer is left at the premises of one customer while the prime mover proceeds to a second customer to drop its load. This is facilitated by a Ratcliff tailboard loader.
Average fuel consumption of the prime mover running solo is 12 mpg, which is reduced to 10 mpg when it is coupled to the trailer. Deliveries are made to all parts of the country.
