• Concerned at falling—or disappearing— profits, nine leading Hull hauliers operating 177 vehicles announced this week that they had formed a trading federation. Known as the Hull and District Transport Federation, the group comprises Bogg Transport Ltd., Coastal Transport Ltd., East and West Coast Transport Co. (Hull) Ltd., Hunters of Hull Ltd., Jack Mull Transport Ltd., Key Warehousing and Transport Co. Ltd., McVeigh Transport Ltd., Robertson Dale Transport Ltd. and Wake Bros. (Haulage) Ltd.

This week Mr. T. W. Jackson, chairman of the Federation and a director of Key Warehousing, told CM: "We have limited the initial entry to nine to get things moving but soon membership will be available to other operators". The hauliers are banding together in an effort to halt the decrease in their individual profitability. They will work together and honour a rates schedule which the Federation has prepared.

The Federation visualizes a large increase in rates for consignments of 1 ton to 10 tons but over 10 tons increases will be marginal and in some cases rates may come down. In addition, a realistic demurrage charge will be operated by all members. This co-operative working is aimed at increasing vehicle productivity and providing a large pool of vehicle availability. In this way the group expects to meet clients' demands without difficulty. The Federation will be non-profitmaking and limited by guarantee. Member firms will retain their identity.
