• MR. W. T. JAMES has been appointed chairman of East Midland Motor Services, Ltd., in succession to Mr. J._ S. Wills, whi) has resigned from the Board owing to pressure' of other duties and MR. R. ".• MR. HENRY T. DUTFIELD was elected chairman of the new Road Haulage Association aethe first meeting of this body's national council. At the same time, Messrs. B. G. Turner, Charles Holclsworth, Isaac Barrier and J. A. M. Bright were elected vice-chairmen. Mr. Roger W. Sewill, M.A., is, of course, the director.

LIEUT.-COLONEL S. E. CROOKE, MC., the genial works manager of Crossley Motors, Ltd:, commanded the 49th County of Lancaster Battalion of theHome Guard since its inception. Ineluded-in it -was a: strong detachment of employees of the Crossley Company, and it was one of the largest battalions in: the country, if not the largest. Lieut.-Colonel Crooke was, in 1911, a member of theefarnous "F " Company of the London Scottish._ He went to France in September, 1914, was invalided home in January, 1915, and commissioned five months later in the R.A. T.F. 286 Btigade-2nd West Lancs. He was promoted major in the field and given command of a 4.5 howitzer . battery in 1918, in which year he won the M.C. Associated with him as the first quartermaster and, later, assistant adjutant to the Battalion, was CaPtana A.., P. . WELLS, the -Crossley sales manager, :who; last December, . was awarded the M.B.E. for meritorious service. He also served throughout the war of 1914-18.
