F. J. Speight has resigned as secretary of George Ewer and Co. Ltd. to devote all his time to his responsibilities as joint managing director of the parent company and most of its subsidiaries. He had been secretary since 1930 and is succeeded by A. C. Vincent.

Sir Harry Crane has been appointed a parttime director of the Transport Holding Co. for two years. Sir Harry will fill the vacancy created by the retirement of W. E. Jones.

British Road Services Ltd. announces that IC. J. F. Hopkins, formerly traffic assistant, Wisbech, is to be manager, Stowmarket branch. J. Ritchie is promoted to manager, Grangemouth branch, from traffic assistant. J. E. Green has been appointed traffic superintendent, Peterborough branch. He was in charge of the Wittlesea branch. D. T. Trindle has been appointed manager, Corby branch. Mr. Trindle was formerly commercial assistant at the East Midlands district office.

Irvine List, one of Michelin's chief technical advisers, has retired after 40 years of almost continuous service with the company.

Clifford Webb, Jnr. has been appointed mechanical superintendent at the Preston central workshops of Ribble Motor Services Ltd. He succeeds H. R. E. Eldridge who recently retired. As foreshadowed in COMMERCIAL Marcia of October 14, D. M. Sinclair, general manager of the Birmingham and Midland Motor Omnibus Co. Ltd.. is to retire on December 31. This week's announcement of his retirement was followed by the news that his deputy, J. W. Womar, will succeed him. Mr. Sinclair, general manager for over 23 years, joined Midland Red as chief engineer in 1940. For nine years previously he was assistant chief engineer with the Northern General Transport Co. Ltd.; he has BET-group service totalling nearly 36 years. Mr. Womar joined Potteries Motor Traction Co. as chief engineer in 1958 and became general manager four years later. He moved to Midland Red in March this year.

0. T. David, Ferodo Ltd's co-ordinator of sales to p.s.v. operators, retires on January 31. He will be succeeded by A. H. Collinson, technical liaison officer at the company's Birmingham sales office. Mr. Collinson's successor will be T. R. Shingler, 31, who has been on the Midlands staff for seven years.

L. F. Aldridge, formerly administrative assistant, has been appointed assistant secretary of the Institute of Transport. M. E. King has been appointed administrative assistant.

OBITUARY

WE regret to record the deaths of Robert Beveridge and F. R. Paterson.

Mr. Beveridge, a formes director of the Scottish Omnibus Group and general manager of Scottish Omnibuses Ltd., began his career in 1901 as a locomotive apprentice. His long association with the Scottish Motor Traction Co. Ltd. began in 1914. Twice, in 1939 and 1955, he was president of the Scottish Road Passenger Transport Association.

Mr. Paterson was joint managing director of Specialloid Ltd. He had been with the company for 30 years.

The end of 40 years' service with the Institute of Transport, 25 as secretary. F. W. Crews, who retired in November and was then appointed an honorary life member, was on Monday presented with a cheque for over 0,000 by the president. R. H. Farmer. As individual members were limited to nominal donations, it represented gifts from a large part of the Institute's world-wide membership.
