A SUGGESTED summer ban on the 1-1 movement of heavy and cumbersome lorry loads between 7 a.m, and 11 p.m. was turned down in the Commons last week by Mr. Morales.

The idea came from Mr. H. Gourlay (Labour, Kirkcaldy), who wanted the restriction to apply to all roads except motorways, especially during the peak traffic months of May to September.

Mr. Marples pointed out that Article 24 of the Motor Vehicles (Authorization of Special Types) General Order, 1962, gave the police power to control the time of movement of abnormal loads, and said he considered this the hest arrangement. In the case of very large loads, added the Minister, he imposed a condition prohibiting movement over bank holiday periods and during summer week-ends.
