Could you tell me whether overrun brakes can be used and whether springs, lights and wings are required on an implement conveyor? Also what speed limits will apply when the trailer is being towed?
AIt would appear that your plans cannot be put into effect for a number of reasons. First, the maximum towing weight recommended for a diesel-engined LandRover is 3 tons and this should be a fourwheeled trailer to prevent excessive weight being transferred to the towing vehicle. Secondly, overrun brakes may only be used on trailers which have gross weights not exceeding 3.5 tons.
The trailer could not, in any case, be classed as a "land implement conveyor" because these are restricted to an unladen weight not exceeding lOcwt.
As the trailer is intended to be drawn by a Land-Rover it therefore becomes an agricultural trailer and as such must not exceed 7ft 6in. width, must be fitted with pneumatic tyres and it must have wings, lights and springs. When drawing the trailer the maximum speed allowed on both ordinary roads and motorways is 40 mph.
