Volkswagen expects its worldwide sales to climb to a record 2.9 million vehicles this year, following a 2% rise to 1.48 million vehicles in the first half of 1988.
Domestic sales fell by 8% to 459,000, but this was amply offset by major export successes in Italy, Spain and France.
These results suggest that Volkswagen has recovered from the foreign exchange problems that beset it in 1986, and reflect the impact of a new cost-cutting programme, including redundancies, to improve profitability.
