THE GOVERNMENT has introduced legislation sumer Safety Act 1978(a) which will prevent the tyres with a slow speed rating. under the Consale of defective From January 1, 1985, it will be illegal to sell a car tyre without an 'E' mark to show compliance with load and speed performance requirements of the United Nations Economic Commission for Europe (ECE) Regulation 30.

It will also be illegal to sell retreaded car or lorry tyres not manufactured and marked in accordance with British Standard BS AU1446, 1977.

Transport Minister Lynda Chalker said: "This is an important step in improving tyre safety. Sub-standard tyre sales will stop. Manufacturers, importers and dealers would be well advised to prepare for changes now."

The Motor Vehicle Tyre Safety Regulations 1984 require manufacturers who regrade tyres to remove the 'E' mark, making them unacceptable for use in the UK. Any contravention could result in withdrawal of the brand's approval certificate, a £2,000s' fine and/or three years' imprisonment for each offence.
