Mr Hoyle has said that entry into industrial tivi y in South Wales would pe 1 British Leyland work in the area.

"When we are spending £100m on the Leyland commercial vehicle operation alone at a crisis point in Leyland's history, can we afford to see that destroyed?"

Support has come from Colt's plans from South Wales trade union representatives, with Wales TUC general secretary George Wright saying: "It is easy for people in other parts of the country to talk about taking jobs away from Wales. But we've got 10 per cent unemployment in this area and we're not in a position to be charitable to other regions."

Colt hopes to recapture export markets lost by Leyland in recent years, and has expressed its preference for the South Wales market because it already uses Newport docks for importing cars.

It has examined other British sites.
