THE COMMISSIONERS' FORTHCOMING PUBLIC SITTINGS

TV= following are the times and places announced by Area Traffic Commissioners for their forthcoming public sittings. In each case the number of the latest Gazette of Notices and Proceedings to be received is mentioned

in brackets. • Gazette No. 21 of the Northern Scotland Area contains a miscellany of licence grants and withdrawals.

Gazette No. 20 of the Yorkshire Area announces still no arrangements for the next sittings, and lists only short-period licences as having been granted.

Warrington Corporation's application for consent to operate for a short distance outside the borough boundary along the Winwick Road is the reason for the public inquiry to be held by the North Western Commissioners on Sep tember 15th. Other applications by Warrington and Chester Corporations will be heard at the sitting following this inquiry, the latter authority's stagecarriage application for a circular route being objected to by Crosville Motor Services, Ltd., and municipalities. No decisions are given in Gazette No. 19.

Of Gazette No. 23 for the West Midland Area 131 pages are devoted to applications received. At the Birmingham sitting, commencing an September 16th, the Great Western Railway Co. and the London, Midland and Scottish. Railway Co. are to object to a large number of express-carriage applications for the backing of licences for excursions and tours from Blackpool; Various regular express services already being operated will at this setting be objected to by the railways, corporations and bit operating companies. This gazette gives details of the Commissioners' standard conditions and those for local authorities.

Gazette No. 25 of the East Midland Area includes 103 pages devoted to applications received. in the short list of licences granted, United Automobile Services, Ltd., appears as having received an express-service backing for the Birmingham-Norwich route, whilst Barton Transport, Ltd., Beeston, is licensed to run an express service between Nottingham and Skegness.

" Western Welsh" applications for stage-carriage services, to he heard before the South Wales Commissioners on September 22nd, will meet with little opposition, but the company is objecting to the applications of a good many smaller operators. Gazette No. 20 lists some licences granted to Crosville Motor Services, Ltd., and others.

At the Gloucester sitting of the Western Commissioners the Great Western Railway Co. will object to several express-service applications affecting its main lines to Liverpool and the West Country, as well as to several applications for excursions and tours.

Gazette No, 24 of the Southern Area shows that, at the Bournemouth sitting arranged for September 15th, a large number of express-carriage applications by Elliott Brothers (Bournemouth), Ltd., is to be heard ; in every single case the Southern Railway Co, is objecting. The Elliott company's services have been admirably run for a long period and have given facilities for travel between Bournemouth and various south-coast, London and midland termini which the railway company has never been able to offer. The evidence brought forward is certain to be interesting. At the same sitting this railway company is objecting to similar applications by other coach operators, whilst the G.W.R. Co. appears as an objector to Crosville applications in respect of Liverpool-London express coach lines.

No decisions by the Commissioners are announced in this gazette, but nine appeal decisions are given concerning the Ledbury, Thames Valley and other companies, the result in each case being unfavourable to the road-service operator.

. Gazette No, 25 of the South-Eastern Area comprises chiefly a list of licence decisions affecting Southdown Motor Services, Ltd., the Royal Arsenal Cooperative Society, Ltd., and others.

According to Gazette No. 25 of the Metropolitan Area the London General Omnibus Co., Ltd., will, on September 14th, object to applications made by the Eastern Counties Road Car Co., Ltd., concerning express services between London and East Anglian towns. At the same sitting the Southern Railway will object to a number of excursion applications by Thomas Cook and Son, Ltd., which is to be heard. Several days will be taken in hearing strongly contested applications regarding excursions and tours. This gazette announces only a few licences as having been granted.
