Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

WE understand that all models of Sentinel steam wagon will, in future, be equipped with an effective type of spark arrester at the top of the funnel. This device is the outcome of a considerable amount of experimental work carried out by the Sentinel Waggon Works, Ltd., of Shrewsbury, which has resulted in the production of an efficient arrester. Whilst stopping entirely the emission of sparks it does not interfere in the least with the draught in the funnel—a vital point in the design of such a fitment.

As will be seen from a sectional illustration, the device consists of a bulbous, sheet-steel outer casing attached to, and forming part of, the funnel, also carrying the damper, which is not shown.

Internally three circular, dished baffle plates, of gradually decreasing size, are installed ; these divert the sparks and cause them to fall first into the bottom of the casing and eventually into the collecting box which forms part of it. From time to time, as may be required, the spent sparks are removed from the collecting box by opening the hinged door at the bottom.
