VAUXHALL'S VIVARO panel van has scooped the commercial vehicle category in this year's MPG Marathon fuel economy competition, which is a two-day. 350-mile race, with an overall figure of 55mpg.

The 114hp. 2.0-litre CDTi Vivaro, driven by MPG Marathon regular Andrew Duerdan and co-driver Jim Smith, bettered Vauxhall's claimed combined figure of 34.4mpg by just over 60%, which made it the overall winner.

Duerdan says: "To achieve a 60% improvement shows van drivers can achieve superb results by applying a responsible approach to their driving."

Event organiser Ross Durkin adds: "Everyone complains when fuel price rises by 5% or 10%, but by avoiding harsh acceleration and harsh braking, you can save 5% to 10% in fuel just like that." CM took part in the marathon in a Vivaro and posted 49.1mpg -, a 43% improvement over the claimed figures.

With that in mind, and based on a gallon cost of £4.80 while covering 25,000 miles a year, CM would cut its fuel bill by just over £1,000.

Broadcaster Sky used the event to obtain a benchmark figure on fuel economy with one of its fully-kitted Vauxhall Vivaros.

Sky field team manager Richard Laze11 says: "With a fleet of 2,500 vans, we have to maximise fuel usage and cut our carbon footprint. We've entered our vans exactly as they are at work, ladders and all.

-We drove economically, but, obviously, engineers are up against deadlines., so it's not always feasible to drive so slowly"

• A full feature on the MPG Marathon will appear in a future issue of CM.
