They told the chairman, Mr. J. R. C.

Samuel-Gibbon, that the Ministry of Transport had recognized the necessity for road works being carried out along the agreed routes and Mr. England added that the Minister had taken the unique step of notifying the authorities that grants would be forthcoming for the purpose " from a special purse

Mr. England contended that the fact that the Ministry's own officers were agreed with the authority engineers was strong support for their opposition.

Questioned as to when he thought the works in Devon might be completed. Mr. England said they hoped to do this by about the end of next February. It was essential to have the work dope before the buses ran, as it would be chaotic and dangerous if they tried to go through the town while work was in progress.

Pressed by the chairman as to when Somerset might complete their share of the work. Mr. Hunt would not commit himself to any possible date.

The chairman asked Mr. Hunt if the Council was trying to fight "a rearguard action" with the hope of preventing the rail closure taking place.

Mr. Hunt assured him that this was not the case. The Council would get on with the work as quickly as possible now that it had received the special grant from the Ministry, he said, but was in the same position as Devon—if at any point there became a case for a compulsory purchase order then matters would he delayed.

On the understanding that both authorities would keep the Commissioners informed as to the progress of the various improvement works which their engineers felt necessary to take buses, the chairman said the application would he adiourned to a date to he fixed.
