• There was a sharp reduction in the number of road fatalities across Europe in 2000, particularly in Central and Eastern Europe, according to data from the European Conference of Ministers of Transport.
Road deaths in Central and Eastern Europe fell by more than 4.9%, continuing the downward trend from 1999. The number of people killed on the roads in Western Europe declined by 2.9%, although fatalities in the UK were up by 0.4%.
The most marked decline was in Macedonia, where road deaths fell by 25%. However, in Iceland the figure was up by more than 500/n .
