Douglas Ewing was so tired that he had even stopped in the slow lane of the motorway at one point before the crash which claimed the life of Maurice Jones at 23:30hrs on 23 May. Swindon Crown Court heard that police believe Jones tried to take evasive action but could not switch lanes because a car in the second lane accidentally prevented him from moving out. He was killed even though the truck was travelling at just 23mph at the point of impact.

Ewing, of Gosport, Hants, admitted causing death by dangerous driving, After the crash, Ewing did not even know which road he was on, believing he was heading north on the A34 rather than west on the M4 in Wiltshire. Ewing later told police that he had not slept the night before the accident.

Jones, married with a 10year-old daughter, was heading for home from Southampton after completing a delivery round when the accident happened.

Ewing is currently serving a six-month jail term for thefts which took place after the crash. He has a string of previous convictions which include burglary, fraud, stealing cars, drugs offences and motoring matters, including driving while disqualified, some of which dated back more than 25 years.

Jailing him for four years, Recorder Richard Jones QC said: "You have got to live with the consequences of your actions, which I am sure have been brought home to you."
