• Rail freight grants from the Government have stopped over two million lorry journeys since 1979 according to Minister for Public Transport, David Mitchell.
During the last seven years, as part of its policy to encourage companies to send their goods by rail rather than road, the Government has awarded 120 freight facility grants totalling £46 million.
Mitchell was making these comments at the opening of a new rail off-loading and handling system at West Drayton, Middlesex for the Bardon Hill Quarry Group. This scheme was awarded a grant of 45% of the costs — £1.5 m — one of the largest grants ever paid.
