Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

with a fleet of 10 medium-range artics and over the years the nature of our business has changed completely. Whereas previously all our work was of a full-load nature we are now doing an increasing amount of small deliveries (trans-ship work), mainly cased machinery with single items weighing up to 5-ton deadweight.

Similarly with the increase in container business it would often suit us to ground empty containers. We have a small fork-lift truck which is suitable for our palletized traffic but fear that we lack sufficient manoeuvring space for a larger machine. Any suggestions?

A Without having detailed knowledge of

the layout of your premises it is difficult to give advice. Certainly if you have covered accommodation with limited headroom you will need a heavy duty fork-lift truck and to make space you may have to out-station part of your fleet.

Alternatively if your premises are totally open or have good headroom you might consider an overhead gantry crane which will require no gangway space. These are of various types ranging from remote-control operation to traVelling cab models. A 5-ton overhead crane with travelling cab is marketed by Herbert Morris Ltd., P.O. Box 7, Loughborough. Electrically operated, its running costs are claimed to be substantially less than a diesel mobile of comparable capacity.
