A LLEGATIONS of rate-cutting were r1.made before the Northern Licensing Authority, at Keswick, when Messrs. Dover and Sons, Keswick, applied for three B licences, to replace one C and two B licences. There were three objectors to the application. The L.M.S. Railway Co. withdrew its objection when it was learned that Messrs. Dover required to operate within only 10 miles of Keswick. It was stated on behalf of Messrs. Dover that an increasing amount of work was being received. Two B-licence vehicles owned by the firm were almost entirely occupied in carrying road materials for Cumberland County Council. Mr. Dover denied that he had created the position by ratecutting. Mr. G. W. Reed, manager Of Messrs. Weightman, said that before the war his firm carried 75 per cent. of the traffic of one particular company, which was now being handled by the applicants, because, he alleged, they were charging a lower rate. Messrs. T Young and Sons, also objectors, said that their vehicles were working at 60 per cent. capacity. Mr. W. Young declared that his latest tender for haulage for the county council was £2 15s. daily for a 2-tonner, £3 for a 3-tontier, and £3 10s. for a 5-ton vehicle. Messrs. Dover said that their figure was £3 Os. 10d. a day for either a 4-ton or 2-ton vehicle. It was stated that the rates fixed by the local branch of the Road Haulage Association were 9s. 3d. an hour for a 5-ton vehicle. Granting Messrs. Dover's application, the Licensing Authority said he did not want the applicants to think he favoured under-cutting, and advised the firm to look into the question of rates.
