Three Interesting Three-wheelers in the 8-cwt. Pay-load Category, in Addition to a Stripped Chassis

Stand 169

'THE three-wheeler has a definite 1 niche in the field of commercial transport, and interesting examples of a successful type are to be found on the stand of this concern, which has three complete vehicles on view and a special chassis, whics affords an excellent idea of the sturdy layout of the James construction. The chassis is made in two sizes—for 8-cwt. and 12-cwt. loads— but only • examples of the complete vehicle in the lighter Class are on yiew.

The power unit is of the two-cylin-. dered air-cooled type, the power being conveyed to the spiral-bevel semi-floating rear axle through a single-plate clutch, a three-speed-and-reverse gear

box and an Open propeller Shaft with flexible couplings. Internal-expanding brakes are provided on all wheels and are inter-coupled for operation by pedal or hand. The suspension of the chassis has received special attention and, at the rear, is effected by underslung semi. elliptic springs, whilst at the front a compression spring in conjunction with a link action is used. The wheelbase of the 8-cwt. model is 6 ft. 4 ins., its overall length being 10 ft. 6 ins., and its overall width 4 ft. 6 ins.; the turning circle is 18 ft.

The 8-cwt. van has a body which is 4 ft. 10 ins. long, 4 ft. wide and 3 ft. 11 ins, high, giving a capacity of 75 cuhiC ft. The dimensions of the lorry body are as_ follow :—Length; 4 ft. 2 ins.; width. 4 ft.; depth of sides, 1 ft. 3 ins. This vehicle has a tailboard hinged from the bottom. .

The open-sided type of body shown' on the stand as a dairyman's van has been produced to meet the demand of those traders who prefer an open type of vehicle, which also provides protection for the whole of the goods in inclement weather.

There are two roll-up waterproof curtains on each side, whilst similar protection is given at the rear above the adjustable tailboard.—James Cycle Co., Ltd., Greet, Birmingham.
