New Gardner LK-engined 4-tonner Weighing Under 2i tons Unladen. Maximumload Four and Eight-wheelers

Stand 34

AMONG the array of E.R.F. cornmerciaI vehicles exhibited on Stand 34 are two new models. The one is shown as a bare chassis, whilst the other is equipped with a streamline saloon cab, incorporating a sliding roof, and a hinge-sided lorry body. There are also three examples of the concern's previous range.

Most interest is already being aroused by the 0E4 4-tonner (bare chassis). It has installed the new Gardner 4LK four-cylindered engine which has an output of 53 b.h.p. at 2,000 r.p.m. The salient feature of this power unit is its low weight, which has been achieved by the use of light alloys for practically the whole of its construction, even the cylinder casting being formed in aluminium. Iron liners are, of course, used for the .cylinder bores.

In general specification this chassis resembles the previous E.R.F. 0E3, in which the Gardner three-cylinclered engine was installed. It is offered in three wheelbase lengths of 8 ft. 6 ins., 11 ft, and 121 ft. respectively, and the unladen weight of the machine with the standard body and cab in the case of . the 11-ft.. wheelbase is just , under 2 tons 10. cwt.

The chassis on view is suitable for a 14-ft. body. It is equipped with 210 20 tyres and has a. 5.5 to-I rearaxle ratio. It is destined for operation in the service of the Scottish Co-operative Wholesale Society, Ltd.

The other new model has a Gardner 4LW engine; it is a 7i-tonner, and differs from the original CI4 model in having a new design of radiator and a redesigned gearbox, whilst the overall length is slightly increased to allow I5-ft. body. to be carried. The unladen weight, in this case, is approximately 3 tons 18 cwt. The machine is provided with servo assisted brakes, operated by the Lockheed hydraulic system, external cylinders mounted away from the hubs being a feature. The drums are 17 ins, in diameter and, in width, 3 ins. and 6 ins, at the front and rear respectively. Much attention has been paid to the suspension system which is claimed to be equally effective both when the machine is laden and when it is unladen. The springs are

of ample length and width, and incorporate an exceptionally large number of leaves.

The third exhibit is another 7i-tonner built for work with a trailer, when a total load of 13 tons can be carried. The model shown has a Gardner fivecylindered engine and long wheelbase.

This model also appears equipped with a steel-lined three-way tipping body.

The largest E.R.F. on view is the model CI682, an imposing eight wheeled l5-tour. It is shown with a saloon cab and a hinge-sided body measuring It. by 6 ft. 9 ins. inside. The specification includes a doubledrive bogie, 36-in. by 8-in. tyre's, twins on all four driving wheels, and an axle ratio Of 6.25 to 1. A self-starter is included in the equipment of the engine, which in this case is a Gardner 6LW model.—E. R. Fodert and Sons (E.R.F.), Ltd., Sun Works, Sandbach.
