Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

Failures to attend court to answer drivers' hours charges boosted the fine given to a Croydon owner-driver to a total of 12,700. Feltharn Magistrates fined Kevin Adnett £1,700 after he failed to appear to answer 10 charges of driving for more than four-and-a-halt hours without taking the required break.

Prosecuting for VOSA, Anthony Ostrin said that at the time Adnett had been working for a company known as Scobie, trading as London First. An analysis of Adnett's charts showed that the excess driving varied between 16 minutes and two hours 19 minutes.

Ostrin said that Adnett had previously been found guilty in his absence on four similar matters, and was fined 11,000 on that occasion. Had Adnett appeared in court, all the offences would have been considered at once, which Is generally to the defendant's benefit. However; he did not and so incurred separate hearings.

CASE HIGHLIGHT

A failure to attend court, thus leaving the court without any explanation or mitigating circumstances for offences committed, can prove to be a very costly exercise.
