rACED with similar applications from 1 Mr. J. Clarkston and the Western S.M.T. Co., Ltd., to provide a service for Branchton, Greenock, housing scheme, the Scottish Traffic Commissioners, awarded a short-term licence to the latter, at Glasgow last week.

Mr. Clarkston had applied for a licence for an 11-seat passenger vehicle and proposed a 20-minute service: he had been ordered off the road by the Ministry of Transport in March after running an intermittent service without a licence.

For Western S.M.T. Co., Ltd., Mr. I. Ramsay said that no official approach for a service had been made to his company, but now that the need was shown, they were prepared to provide it. Mr. W. F. Quin, chairman, said that where an existing operator was prepared to provide a service he must be allowed to do so, although he felt some sympathy with Mr. Clarkston.

SECURITY SERVICE EXTENDED

THEspecial security facilities provided for the transport of bullion, banknotes and other valuable loads in the Greater London area by the Armoured Car Co., Ltd., Slough, Bucks, is to be extended to the Midlands. The Armoured Car Co. (Birmingham), Ltd., has been formed with a capital of £1,000. The directors •are Mr. Glenn L. Oogil, of America, and Mr. Roy Winkleman, tech, nical adviser to the Armoured Car Co., Ltd., and president of an American bullion-transport company.

The Arrnoured Car Company's operations were described in The Commercial Motor on January 3, 1958.

SLICE OF THE MARKET

NEARLY half the vehicles up to 2 tons capacity being registered in this country were made at Longbridge. This was stated on Monday by Mr. W. H. Hooper, commercial vehicle sales manager of the Austin Motor Co., Ltd., at an Austin exhibition arranged by Central Garage, Ltd., Bradford. He added that the factory's output of commercial vehicles was equally divided between home and export trade.

CALEDONIAN EXTEND

AMAJOR extension to the premises of Road Services (Caledonian), Ltd., which now gives the company 70,000 sq. ft. of covered space, has been completed.

New administrative offices, which control the fleet of 300 vehicles, executive and staff dining rooms occupy one section. The two other sections are devoted to working areas and maintenance and repair shops.

ADVANCE COMPENSATION

ASCHEME for making advance payntents of compensation to land owners and tenants whose land is required for the trunk and special roads programme has been announced by the Minister of Transport.
