STOBART GROUP is waiting to hear whether its plans for a new depot in Lutterworth will be rejected after local planning officers recommended the scheme should be refused.

Harborough District Council’s planning committee was due to debate Stobart’s proposals for a warehouse at the edge of Magna Park on Tuesday (6 March) as CM went to press.

However, in their pre-committee report, planners advised that the current application for an office complex and 130 LGV parking spaces should be refused on the basis that it will increase the size of Magna Park and be detrimental to the countryside.

They also said not enough information about the increase in traffic to the site along the A4303 has been given. Since the plans were submitted last year, Lutterworth Town Council and Bitteswell Parish Council have both expressed concerns that the site lies outside the current limits of Magna Park and that the facility should not be expanded.

In January this year, Stobart revealed it is to close its Corby and Alcester distribution centres, which are part of its chilled distribution division network. It has been consulting with 200 employees at Alcester and 100 at Corby sites over the changes.

The new chilled and ambient warehouse at Lutterworth will employ 100 people. Stobart Group says it will not comment before a decision is made.
