The theme of togetherness in transport education was very much to the fore at the annual dinner of the Institute of Traffic Administration's London centre on Saturday. The centre vice-chairman, L. J. Evans, said that if there was not actual combination with other bodies there had to be co-operation—not least because of the shortage of tutors.

Reminding us that the IoTA's first examinations would be in May this year, he said courses were already available in the London area. And he urged transport men to take full advantage of the opportunities in "The Bill" for enhancing the status of transport management.

Guest speaker George Wilmot was even stronger on the co-operation theme (which will not surprise readers of Common Room) and said he'd been urging co-ordination for

years. The IoTA had to decide whether it wanted to be professional body or a society for people with common transport interests. If the former, then establishment of an examination syllabus was essential. He was delighted that the Institute had chosen to do this, but it was of critical importance that all transport bodies should now get together on education. The,transport manager's licence could be a stepping stone to professionalism, said George. Amen to that.

He was forthright in another way, too, when he stated flatly that inland transport problems in this country were the greatest social hazard we faced in the last 30 years of this century, and all the plans in the world by economists, town and country planners and Parliamentary folk would come to nothing unless professionalism was achieved in transport management. That's telling 'ern.
