ANEW International tractor, designated the 1-12, has recently been placed on the British market by The International Harvester Co., of Great Britain, Ltd., 259, City Road, London, E.C.1. Of small and compact design, the machine is ideally suited for short haulage work in confined spaces—the turning circle is only 81 ft—but at the same time it is amply powered for work on roads and rough tracks.
The four-cylindered engine has a bore and stroke of 3 ins. and 4 ins, respectively, and the power output at 2,000 r.p.m. is 21 b.h.p. Push-rod-operated overhead valves are used, and a feature of the engine is the provision of replaceable cylinder liners. A down-draught carburetter is fitted, together with a large oil-type air cleaner, and the petrol tank has a capacity of nine gallons.
The gearbox provides three forward speeds and a road speed of 10i m.p.h. is attained in top gear at an engine speed of 2,000 r.p.m. The rear axle is of the semi-floating type and is mounted on ball bearings. A drawbar is provided both at the front and the rear.
Low-pressure pneumatic tyres are used on all wheels, the tyre size for the rear wheels being 9.00-24, and for the front wheels 6.00-9.
Adequate protection against dust and dirt is provided, spring-mounted, rawhide seals preventing the ingress of dust to the bearings, and high-grade gaskets seal the cover plates and all frame connections.
Internal-expanding•brakes in large-diameter drums on the rear wheels are controlled by pedal, the hand-lever being interconnected to operate the same shoes.
A power take-off is provided and a belt pulley can be supplied at a small extra cost. The wheelbase is 5 ft., and the overall length is 8 ft. 3 ins. The tractor is sturdily built and should give economy of running • on work of a varied nature. It is to be sold in this country at a price of £235.
